Contempt and Guilt

THE Upwey study of the potentially devastating effect of the new land-clearing rules is exactly the kind of approach that is needed before a final decision is made on the 30-year-old existing rules.

The Government's guilt-ridden knee-jerk decision to even contemplate the change at this stage flies in the face of caution and due process. Not only is this a matter under consideration by the Bushfires Royal Commission, but the Government has asked for a management plan to be prepared for each of the 12 green wedges surrounding Melbourne.

It seems fair to ask whether this proposal is a measure of the contempt that the Government has for these two processes.
