Tribunal orders farmer to replant firebreak

A LAND owner's attempt to protect his neighbours from bushfires has backfired - he has been ordered to replant land he cleared.

Despite overwhelming support from residents of the small Gippsland community of Langsborough, which narrowly escaped the Black Saturday fires, Jo Van Gaal has lost an 18-month battle with Wellington Shire Council.

Brumby to give owners right to clear bush property

LANDOWNERS will get greater powers to fell trees and clear scrub from their properties as the state prepares for the coming fire season.

Changes to vegetation policy were being made to give landowners more control to clear the land around their properties, Premier John Brumby said.

"It'll shift the balance more towards landowners," he said.

"They need some increased rights to make sure they can make their state safe and make their homes safe.
